I’M BACK ON YOUTUBE!

Happy Sunday!

I’m starting the week off with some awesome news….

I AM BACK ON YOUTUBE!!

Over the summer, I became obsessed with watching YouTube videos – staying up all night watching makeup tutorials, fashion videos, and more. After watching so many of my blogger friends take the jump into video blogging, I decided I was going to, too. With my iPhone and some free PC editing software, I made two videos about my trip to Atlantic City and a Tim McGraw concert. Though they weren’t exactly what YouTube videos usually entail, I pushed aside my nerves to share them with the world.

I mean, we all have to start somewhere, right?!

So for Christmas, I decided to take the plunge and ask for proper editing software and a new camera. And with that, I am officially back on YouTube.

I have plans for some awesome videos to come out, so make sure to subscribe!

My must have songs for the weekend, TIDAL + your chance to see Lil Wayne

This post is sponsored by TIDAL and Her Campus Media. All opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make Sparkle and Shine possible!

Tidal

Happy Thursday, readers!

Someone please tell me how it is already the weekend? As the weeks fly by and I get closer and closer to graduation, I live for those weekend nights of getting ready to go out with my best friends. It’s these nights, the nights I count down to starting on Sunday, that I will think back to myself, smile, and laugh about when I am in the scary real world in a few months. Which is why, to prepare for your nights of slapping the bag and dancing on table tops, I am sharing my top five pregame songs.

Jordan Belfort by Wes Walker // I’m Okay/Drinking Rum & Redbull by Beenie Man //

Too F**cked Up To Call by 2AM Club// Doses & Mimosas by Cherub //

And to continue to aid your music needs for the weekend, I want to introduce you all to TIDAL! TIDAL, often vocally supported by Kanye, is a global music and entertainment platform. The modern, easy to use music streaming service offers a wide variety of artists, genres, and videos. TIDAL also includes live-streaming, granting uses access to celebrity-only events that Spotify and Pandora users don’t have the option of seeing. How else was I able to watch Kanye, Kim, and the rest of the Kardashian klan at the Yeezy Season three show? Plus, any true Kanye fan knows that one can only hear The Life of Pablo album on TIDAL. Need more incentive to start using TIDAL? Well, I have just that.

SWFC_970x250

TIDAL has partnered with Lil Wayne to promote community service among college students. Sparkle and Shine is joining them, too!

Until February 29th, all undergrad college students at a four-year university can participate in TIDAL’s Social Wave for Change competition. Students must publicly post a photo or video of them completing any type of community service act (such as one participating in QTHON or your school’s version of the dance marathon) on their Instagram page or onto TIDAL’s Facebook wall. In the post, each student must include #TIDALXChange, their school name, and tag a friend.

From there, a panel of judges selected by TIDAL will check out all the submissions to determine the finalists. Finalists will receive a silent disco event for their school. The winner will receive a Lil Wayne concert near his/her school! How cool?! Can you imagine listening to middle-school dance anthem Lollipop in person?

All participants are eligible for a 3-month complimentary subscription to TIDAL.

Find out more on the competition’s FAQ page.

I’d love to see your posts, so make sure to tag @sparkleshinesam on your Instagram posts and @Sparkle and Shine on your Facebook posts.

Enjoy the weekend!

Thank you, Seventeen!

seventeen edit 1.jpg

After two years of working with my dream company, I am now passing on my Seventeen Social Club torch to other social media mavens and bloggers. My contract with the company has wrapped up, there is now an end-date listed next to Seventeen Magazine on my LinkedIn, and the chapter in my life has ended.

My favorite memory was during my first year with the company. My little and I got to attend the 2014 New York City Makeup Show. We skipped a day of studying for finals to go gallivanting around the beautiful Big Apple. It was the first time I got to introduce myself as press at a big event, leaving me with butterflies that I could certainly get used to. Once inside the Metropolitan Pavilion, Amber I got to talk to different vendors, sit through tutorials, test our new beauty products, and of course, make some purchases! To find out more about that incredible experience, make sure to check out the post from May of 2014.

Besides being able to attend the New York City Makeup Show, I was exposed to a lot of different companies that I may not have gotten the opportunity to contact otherwise. Maybelline and Milani cosmetics became staples in my makeup bag after receiving so many awesome products from them. I also got hooked on ABC Family’s one-season show “Chasing Life” after ABC Family and Seventeen helped me host a season premiere party for “Chasing Life” and “Pretty Little Liars.”

While working for Seventeen over the past two years, I have gotten to experience so much and realize how much I truly love the media industry. Here’s to hoping I continue to reach more goals, continue to fall in love with this industry, and more as graduation (eeeeek!) keeps creeping up on me.

My Flannel Friday secret {#OOTD}

It’s Friday…are you wearing a flannel?

Flannel Friday was a common trend in my high school and sometimes I find myself absentmindedly wearing a flannel on the last day of the school/work week.

USE3

USE4

USE2

USE1

USE5

Flannel: Expedition Flannel Shirt from Eddie Bauer | Vest: Women’s Puffer Vest from Lands’ End | Leggings: The Daily Legging from Victoria’s Secret | Boots: Lauren Ralph Lauren Marion Riding Boots from DSW | Necklace: Kenneth Cole NEW YORK Goldtone Chain Link Necklace from Lord & Taylor

But when I am buying my flannels, I have a secret. As a retired swimmer, over 5’8” tall, busty, I am built more like a linebacker than a stereotypical girl. When I go to buy flannels, many stores, like American Eagle, don’t fit me properly. They won’t fit right across my broad shoulders, close across my bust, or will stop before where it is socially acceptable to wear with leggings. At times, even looks like I am in the middle of an Alice in Wonderland like transformation of growing larger and everything else stays the normal size.

And this is why my secret is that I always, always, always purchase flannel’s from the boys section. But more importantly, male-focused stores that are known for their flannels. This is why I always choose to get them from Eddie Bauer. Here, I am able to purchase my flannels as a “tall” and never need to worry about feeling uncomfortable in a flannel that doesn’t fit the way that I would like it to. So for all my fellow tall girls out there and girls who feel they don’t fit a stereotypical female size, I recommend searching outside of the girl section because no one needs to not have the comfy-cute option of an over sized flannel and leggings.

Where’s your favorite place to purchase your flannels? Comment below and let me know!

Last first day of school {#OOTD}

Hey, readers!

Yesterday was one of the scariest days of my life – it was my last first day of school ever. Yup, that’s right – I started the second semester of my senior year of college. Am I ready for the emotional roller coaster that this semester is going to be? Oh, absolutely not. Which is why I decided to at least dress the part of looking like I have it all together.

So check out the look….

Jacket: Faux Leather Moto Jacket from Forever 21Sweater: (Similar) from Aerie

Scarf: (This has been my favorite scarf since high school, so it’s old – but here’s a similar one) from Charming Charlie

Jeans: WESTPORT 1962 Signature Skinny Jeans from DressBarnBoots: Diba Shelby Bootie from DSW

And with today being the second day, I somehow ended up back in yoga pants and a Greek Streak Alpha Delta Pi spirit jersey. Whoops?

In my defense I somehow managed to wake up with swollen blood shot eyes, so I wasn’t trying to waste a cute outfit when I wasn’t going to wear makeup or glasses.

Whatever, maybe tomorrow I’ll look go back to looking put together..

Life is more than just an Instagram like

I worked New Years Eve. At the hours I stood at my CVS register, I aimlessly scrolled through images of sequin dresses, gold Mylar balloons, and perfectly timed kisses. I did nothing but absentmindedly sigh at my blue uniform top and remind myself in my head what this time and a half pay check will do for my social calendar back at school.

The next morning, I missed all Mimosa filled brunches, talk of “loosing weight” resolutions, and awkward bed side conversations, as I went back to work to ring up the Advil and Pedialite-needed customers that so importantly needed their hangovers cured. As I went back on the social media app and continued to scroll through, I realized that these posts meant nothing. The amount of likes on a picture did not, and does not, matter. It didn’t matter that I missed out on Instagram opportunities to show the world how much fun my friends and I could have or get approval of how I look in a new dress. Why?

Because there is so much more to life than Instagram.

INSTAGRAM_LIKES1

As a millennial, my generation places so much emphasis onto the social media app. It has become an overall lifestyle, with the need to snap a picture of the moment you are in instead of enjoying it.

At concerts, our parents enjoyed Bruce Springsteen and Madonna by listening to the music and living in the moment. Instead, our generation has their phones out to take pictures and videos. We are living the moment through shattered glass and dirty screens.

From there, a post goes up on Instagram, geo-tagged in at the concert venue, letting all of the world know that you are here. This is what you’re doing. That you’re cooler than them. That you’re doing something they aren’t.

Going to a concert is just an easy example to list. Anytime you are out and about – eating at a trendy restaurant, on a vacation, doing something that someone else is not. You want to show the world what we are doing, instead of enjoying it and living in the moment.

And by no means am I saying that I’m not guilty of doing this, readers.  If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I post whenever I go out, tons of posts dedicated to my best friends and sorority fam, and pictures of my internship. It comes out of habit now for us 90’s babies to post what we are doing, if and only if it is deemed “insta-worthy.”

powell

But the part that really breaks my heart is the way that we put such an emphasis on the amount of likes we receive. We aren’t a Kardashian/Jenner, who make our net (and self) worth through filtered pictures online. But if you’re Khloe reading this, shoot me an e-mail… I would love to connect!

You don’t need the validation from your high school soccer teammates, the cute boy who sits across from you in sociology, or your little’s biological sister. You don’t need validation from anyone. You are beautiful – inside and out. Their opinion, and if your picture is worthy of a double tap from them, doesn’t determine who you are and if you are worth it. You are worth it.

Repeat after me – you. are. worth. it.

You aren’t the 97 likes on your selfie. You are the A that you just got on your thesis paper that you spent weeks in the library in. You are the smile that you received when you were donating food at a homeless shelter. You are the “I love you” from your mom.

As we continue to delve deeper into 2016, remember this. It’s a realization I am accepting more and more: Life is more than just Instagram. Enjoy the moment. Eat your food. Take in the concert. View your surroundings. Laugh with the people you are with. And more importantly, remember one like or one thousand likes on a picture doesn’t determine your self-worth.

Come travel with me + Vera Bradley this New Years Eve

This is a sponsored post in partnership with Vera Bradley and Her Campus Media. All words and opinions are my own.

I’m late.

Readers, no matter how much time I have to get somewhere, I always end up late. Give me an hour or five and I’m going to use every extra minute and then some. My family has even started telling me that events are happening earlier than they actually are just so I can end up on time.

This is why when I travel, I like to stay super comfortable. My yoga pants and puffer vests are always my go to outfit and my Vera Bradley Large duffel travel bag in Katalina pink is my go to luggage!

The bag, which sells for $85 online, is big enough to fit so much stuff in it. Ask any of my friends – I am a total over-packer. For a simple one night’s trip, I bring about three bags – this duffel, my purse, and a duffel just for hair products.

Vest: (similar) puffer vest from the Gap | Top: (similar) Long sleeve from Victoria’s Secret | Yoga pant: Foldover waist bootcup yoga pants from Victoria’s Secret

Whenever I travel, my four most important items are my robe, my makeup bag, my travel coffee mug, and my sunglasses!

I’ve always loved robes for as long as I can remember, thanks to my grandma. She would always show me how blissful it would be in the morning to be snuggled up in a cozy robe and slippers. My robe has become a part of who I am – and the fact that’s cheetah print really seals the deal! Whether it’s a trip to my little’s house or a beach vacation, I always have my robe to wake up to in the morning and wear when I am doing my makeup.

Which leads me right into my second most important item – my makeup bag! Makeup gives me that extra confidence boost that I always want- whether it be just my basic mascara or a full smokey eye. My newest makeup bag, from Victoria’s Secret (similar), is big enough to carry all that I need from any of makeup hauls.

I live off of coffee. I’m pretty sure my veins are a mixture of coffee, diet coke, and glitter more than they are blood. Whenever I travel, I always need to have coffee with me. Hey, I need coffee with me whenever I go anywhere. Santa Clause brought me this new Juicy Couture travel mug to bring with me. If I don’t get to stop at a Dunkin Donuts before I hit the road, I always make my own coffee. It’s great to have my own travel mug with me because some places, especially at my school, let you fill up your own mug for a cheaper price.

Lastly, I always will have my sunglasses with me. I have three of the exact same pairs – one pair I always have in my car, one I always have in my purse, and then another pair that I try to always use and keep on me. They’re great to avoid the sun in your eyes while driving, any glares on the road, or keep your eyes hidden when you’re peaking on the hotties laying next to you on the beach! Something about a great pair of sunglasses also always helps my confidence level – I feel just so badass in a great pair of aviators.

What I wore & how I was asked to a fraternity Christmas party

Ho, ho, ho readers!

Are you in the holiday spirit? I know that even with finals being right around the corner, I am makings sure that I am with Christmas music, candy canes, and holiday pajamas.

Right after giving gifts to those that I love, my favorite part of the holiday is the Christmas parties! I love the ugly sweaters, the red dresses, and decorative earrings.

Last week, my best friend and I went to his fraternity’s Christmas party and I wanted to share the look with you all:

Sami’s Holiday Gift Guide: An On Location Tour

This is a sponsored post. However, all opinions are my own.

holiday guide

It’s beginning to look a lot like Blogmas, readers!

So, it seems that all my professors have gotten together and decided that they were going to make the week BEFORE finals week when everything would be due. Of course, that would be successful if not every one of my professors decided to do that, but well, we can’t change some stuff in life, now can we?

In the meantime, I have been holiday shopping for all of the special people in my life. After last year’s successful holiday guide, I decided to bring it back this year! So if you’re looking for a craft, a new phone case, or more, last year’s gift guide has got you covered.

And for all you little elves this year, we’re kicking off with something for your favorite movie buffs or someone who loves an experience rather than an item.

On Location Tours offers just that!

My mom and I went on the New York City TV & movie tour earlier this month and had such an amazing time! For only $43 a ticket, you can travel all around NYC for 2.5 – 3 hours checking out where some of your favorite TV shows and movies have filmed. We even got to see where they were going to be filming an upcoming CBS show, how cool?!

During that time, my mom, myself, and the others on our tour bus were taken all over New York City to see the sights of where some of the best movies have filmed. Throughout the trip, our tour guide will tell us about the films that have taken place at the locations, show us clips, and tell us insider secrets about the different locations.

Check out the pictures from the trip. Do you recognize them from some of your favorite movies and TV shows? Hint, hint you should recognize some of them from Gossip Girl, Friends, Sex and the CityGhostbusters, and New Year’s Eve!
