My Phone Detox, courtesy of The Bored and Brilliant Project

So, readers, when I tell you I’m a millennial in college, what stereotypes come to your head?

I’m sure there are plenty and that one of them are “addicted to technology/her cell phone.” And it’s safe to say, you are absolutely correct.

My phone seems to be attached my hand and is as important to my life as my beating heart is. I use it more than just the usual tech obsessed young adult because of keeping up with Sparkle and Shine.

I run a majority of my blog and continue to evolve my personal brand right from my phone. I have my blog-only business e-mail set up right on my phone, which allows me to send and receive e-mails right in the palm of my hands.

Plus, I even write parts of my posts on my phone. I have the WordPress app that allows me to write my posts — and even publish them right from there if I wanted. I often will sometimes type them up in an e-mail, or as a note, until I am 100% confident in the layout of the piece.

From there, my social media usage comes into play. A huge part of being a blogger is social media presence and I place a lot of emphasis on it. I need to not only be sharing my posts on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook, but sometimes companies will only want posts on social media platforms. And to be successful on these, you need to monitor certain parts of your social media — like your Instagram theme, follower ratios, and more. This means having a whole folder on my phone of apps that allow me to edit my photos, check to see who is following/not following me, what links are doing the best, and more. It’s a folder I imagine the Kardashians had before they hit their peak of being THE social media First Family.

Plus, I have apps that I use as a college student for my school work. I have my school e-mail connected to my phone, as well as apps that allow me to check my grades and my class schedule.

But this doesn’t mean it’s all work and all play. My sorority little has me addicted to 2048, a mobile game I don’t think I will ever win (even though I spent more than half of my two hour commute on Monday/Friday trying to).

And none of that even equates to the apps I use to track the NYC subway, Metro North Train, check my bank account, or transfer money to my friends on SquareCash.

No wonder my phone tells me everyday my storage is almost full — am I right?

But the thing is, this is all pretty normal for today’s society.

A recent study says that mobile consumers spend almost three hours a day on their phones.

And from this, The Bored and Brilliant Project, from the WNYC podcast Note to Self, was born. I decided to participate in the project, to see how I can learn how to function without my phone and focus on my thoughts and the world around me, not my cell phone.

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 11.14.42 AM

Here goes nothing…

DAY ONE: KEEP YOUR PHONE IN YOUR POCKET

In the podcast, someone said that they were going “on a phone binge” and even practicing to leave their phone on their desk. Though I don’t think I went on a phone binge (because I don’t think I could honestly even use it more than I do), I also did try to practice by leaving my phone when I didn’t need it. Did I need to be on it when I walk to class? Did I need it when I ran to the bathroom at work? Did I need to aimlessly scroll through my phone an hour before bed? No, no, and definitely no. So for my first challenge, I had to keep my phone in my pocket.

I completely couldn’t do this. I went to work on the train that morning, which is a two hour commute. At first, I was doing okay — I brought a new book to read, some case briefs to read for my 300 level law class, and even was going to nap. However, I couldn’t keep my hands off my phone. I needed to play 2048. I needed to text my best friend about the weird dream I had the night before. I needed to browse the latest items on Forever 21. I was able to put my phone away at certain points, like when I was walking to work or when I had to walk around the office. But I couldn’t turn off the notifications and couldn’t just ignore it. But it’s about baby steps-right?

DAY TWO: PHOTO FREE DAY

“See the world through your eyes, not your screen” was the words that were prompted when I was told that day two’s challenge was that I couldn’t take photos. I mean, yes, my phone is over flowing with so many pictures — screenshots of funny Tweets to send to my friends, a selfie from a coffee date with my little, blurry pictures before going out, just because it’s another day and I couldn’t resist how beautiful the sun looked- I’m constantly snapping pictures. However, I started by undownloading the Snapchat app — my biggest picture taking app.

However, nothing was really going on the day that I had this challenge. I had a lot of work to do, had a lot of meetings, and wasn’t going to be having much fun — minus Netflix and a glass of wine at the end of the night in my bed. So, I can safely say I successfully was able to complete this challenge! I went one whole day without taking a picture, but yes, it did feel a little weird and I was craving to redownload Snapchat, just like the second glass of wine craving. And just like I do with that second glass of wine craving, I caved.

DAY THREE: DELETE THAT APP

Someone who launches apps more than 60 times a day is an addict, according to the third podcast. Though I don’t think I have an addiction to any specific app, I definitely do have that one app that I find myself on…. Twitter.

I love Twitter. I don’t know what it is, but I love Twitter. I use it more than needed- finding time to refresh my feed, reading my own tweets, and constantly checking to see any new Cosmo/Thought Catalog/ Elite Daily/Seventeen Magazine articles that are posted. Oh, an article about Kylie Jenner’s beauty tips? Yup, need to check that out. Oh, an article about why life is better as a sorority girl? Definitely going to read and going to retweet. Oh, an article related to nothing I need to know and don’t care about, yet I’m still going to read it? Abso-freakin-lutely. I love it.

So, today, I deleted the app. And it was hard. At first, I decided I was going to use Instagram or Facebook or any other social media site to keep myself off of Twitter. But, I found myself trying to go back. So then, I deleted the app, and it felt like I deleted part of myself. Dramatic? Yes. Which was horrific that I actually felt this way. This is when I realized hey, maybe I actually overly use this app…

Was it successful? On my phone, yes, because the app was gone. But I would find myself typing “www.twitter.com” into my laptop and scrolling through more often than not. I wouldn’t even noticed. It just sort of happened.

Today, I would say it was 50/50 successful, but 100% successful of showing me that maybe I do use my phone a little too much.

And at midnight, as I laid in my bed planning out my next day, I redownloaded Twitter and didn’t look back.

DAY FOUR: TAKE A FAUXCATION

TIME FOR A FAUXCATION! I’m a little excited for this — a break from texting. Can I get an amen?!

A break from responding to everything from “hey, would you like to get lunch?” to “OMG I HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED THIS WEEKEND” to “Can you help me?”

Starting at noon, I gave it to my friend to keep in his room. I was out of class, phone-free, and was ready to focus on myself.

First, I went to the gym and brought my iPad to binge watch Gossip Girl on the elliptical. I went back to my room, showered, and took a nap. Now what?

I went on my computer, wrote a blog post, FaceTimed with my mom, and did a face mask. I focused on myself and was feeling like a brand new person. It was now 5 o’clock and Paul came back, handed me my phone, and said “Take this back. You’re getting too many text messages. It’s freaking me out that you’re not answering.”

And then I looked at my phone. Over 100 text message in 5 hours. Really? Some included multiples from different people — “why aren’t you answering?,” “HELLLLLLO,” and my personal favorite “I know you’ve been listening to Bieber’s new album so much, don’t tell me it made your heart actually explode.”

But then I decided to text my friends back, telling them “Sorry — I put my phone away for a little to just breathe.” Their responses? Not pleasant. Everyone was acting like I said I was going to go to the moon or transferring schools, not that I simply put my phone away for a little bit.

Okay, okay.

DAY FIVE: ONE SMALL OBSERVATION

So today, I had to focus on the world around me. I had to not have my nose glued into my phone. I had to have my eyes and ears open to the world around me to see what is going on, in hopes that I make an observation.

And what did I learn? One of my residents has a tattoo.

Okay, so it’s not exactly a life changing observation or something that made me stop and realize that I needed to switch my life around or some crazy idea that leads me to some sort of life movement. But it was an observation I hadn’t noticed before.

Blame it on the lack of phone? Blame it on the warmer weather and she wore capris? I’m going to blame it on this challenge.

DAY SIX: DREAM HOUSE

Here we go — last day!

I was realizing that I had so much more potential for my life that I was suppressing cause I had my nose glued to my phone. What about writing a poem? One person from the podcast said that’s what they did. Why can’t I?

And on that note, I jumped into the last task — watching water boil. Yup, you read that right — the last task is to watch water boil. But the task, after that happens, was to empty my wallet, take the contents out, and to construct my dream house.

So with my Chipotle receipts, Metrocard, and Victoria’s Secret gift cards, I had to try and build a house.

It wasn’t pretty and it definitely wasn’t exactly symmetrical. But I waited for the water to boil to make mac and cheese (okay, so I didn’t wait the entire time because I was hungry and the noodles were shaped like Minions so I couldn’t wait). But I tried.

And the point was that if you’re bored, you are much more creative. But what I got from this, instead, was that there is more to focus on life than just my phone and someone’s Instagram picture.

And just like that, six days were over and I had completed the challenge. I survived.

I didn’t thrive, but I survived.

I think that we should all take the time out. It made me realize how much I really am on my phone and I am missing out. From now on, I may walk to work without my phone. I may put it away when I need a breather and focus on myself. I don’t think I’ll be able to live without the Twittersphere, but I think that I can go without it for a few hours.

Cause in the end, this left me feeling a little bit like Ferris Bueller…

And I don’t want to miss out on anything.

If you decide to take the challenge, comment below and let me know. I would love to hear how it goes for you!

Viva Las Alpha Delta Pi {Semi Formal 2015 pictures!}

Hey, readers!

Looking back at recent Sparkle and Shine posts, I realized how I shared how super excited I was for my semi formal. I told you how I asked my date and how I was fueling my excitement by wearing my new letters, but then I never told you about how the actual semi formal was!

And it was awesome!

Since I was my chapter’s previous social chair, I haven’t been to a semi that I haven’t planned in years. It was so nice to go to an event and just be able to enjoy it and not need to make sure everything is going smoothly. Plus, I went with my best friend in the entire world so I knew we were going to have a blast.

Plus, since my big is still here for grad school, she came to pictures, too! It was the first family photo with my big, me, my little, grand little, and great grand little.

Check out some of my favorite pictures from the night below:

Wearing my New Greek Streak letters for any occasion to get pumped for semi formal

This is a sponsored post. However, all opinions are my own.

Hey, readers!

Did you survive Halloween? I’m sure that my absence from Sparkle and Shine may have caused you to think that I didn’t, but I promise that I did!

Since Halloween, I have been preparing for semi formal which means going to the gym, booking nail appointments with my sisters, and browsing Pinterest for the perfect hair and makeup look. While I am getting ready for the super fun night with my best friend and sisters, I have been wearing Alpha Delta Pi letters to get even more excited!

Recently, I filled you in on my new favorite Greek life company, Greek Streak. I received two tank tops from the company and have been loving them ever since I received them. The site offers fresh designs that I have not seen on any other Greek shirt website.

greek streak

Of all my favorite parts of Greek Streak – the cool designs, ability to design my own tops, and the fact that the company is built for Greeks by Greeks -my absolutely favorite was that I have the ability to dress up or dress down the tank tops I got.

When I want to go to the gym, the tank top is perfectly versatile enough to throw it on with my favorite part of crop leggings! It’s light weight which avoids my biggest pet peeve of having my top stick to me when I am sweating on the elliptical or is too tight and makes me feel uncomfortable in Zumba class.

Sneakers: No longer sold (Similar from Kohl’s) | Water bottle: Contigo 32 oz. water bottle from Walmart |

Yoga mat: C9 Champion yoga mat from Target

And then after the gym, my schedule is filled with meetings, lunch dates, classes, library sessions, and coffee runs. For this, if I don’t want to just lounge around in gym clothes, I can dress the tank top up. I’m still in my letters and look super cute for no matter what the day throws at me.

You can get 15% off all spirit jerseys by entering code “SPARKLESFJ” at checkout.

Say hello to the newest and freshest Greek life tees from Greek Streak

This is a sponsored post. However, all opinions are my own.

Happy Monday, readers!

For once, my large iced caramel latte with skim from Dunkin Donuts isn’t the only thing getting me through my Monday morning slump. This weekend, I spent a lot of time with my sorority sisters and my family. So as I am busy spending my day in SoHo at my internship, hustling and bustling around the beautiful NYC, I am still laughing from all of the jokes and smiling at the fun times we had together this weekend (even though my family spent a lot of time stressing about our semi formal dresses and when to book our spray tan appointments).

If you are a returning reader, you know that my sorority is one of the biggest parts of my life. My big, little, and grand little will be standing next to me at the alter as my bridesmaids and the Godparents to the future little Samis. Alpha Delta Pi has always been my main support system while at school, as well as my biggest source of happiness. This is why whenever I get a chance, I love to rep Alpha Delta Pi.

I don’t think I ever shared with you the day that we welcomed my great-grand little to the fam!

My newest obsession for purchasing Alpha Delta Pi apparel from is Greek Streak, an officially licensed Greek t-shirt company built for Greeks by Greeks!

greek streak

The sites staff consists of current fraternity and sorority members who were looking to create a new look for Greek t-shirts. The site offers some of the best designers in the industry to help your Greek organization looking amazing, so say goodbye to your typical philanthropy event tee and say hello to something fresh.

Greek Streak allows for you to design your own t-shirts or browse already designed ones.

After hearing about how amazing they sound, I just had to make some purchases! I decided to get the beach letters, specifically designed for Alpha Delta Pi, and then the retro letters, which are available in all sorority letters!

Besides tank tops, the site offers short sleeves, long sleeves, and spirit jerseys. With the winter weather coming in December, I know the spirit jerseys are definitely on my shopping list of things that I need.

How I asked my date to sorority semi & cute ways you can ask, too!

Happy Thursday and happy semi-formal season, readers!

Yes, I know, I know that this end of the sentence seems stressful. How is it already time to start getting ready for semi-formal? The dress shopping, spray tan appointments, and finding a date.

The concept of promposals and outlandish ways to ask a date always flood my Instagram feed and Pinterest boards. Last year, I chose to only ask my date with a tacky, poorly rhymed poster.

So this year, when I was deciding to ask my best friend in the entire world, I knew that I wanted to do something fun. He knew he was coming, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to ask in a fun way!

After spending more hours than I would like to admit to on Pinterest, I found a cute way to finally ask!

Check it out:

10000240_10207228762784866_757301995_n 12170464_10207228767944995_895312223_n 12179875_10207228768865018_1261291547_n

So fun fact, thanks to my mom, I grew up loving donuts. All my friends know that I love jelly donuts cause it makes me think of my mom when I’m home sick at school and I even decorated my resident’s doors around Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. Paul knows this, so I thought I could easily show up at his room and just offer him a donut.

He knew I was coming from my daily Dunkin trip, so before I went into his room I wrote on the inside, “DONUT be surprised….SEMI?” So when I walked in and had a box of donuts, he didn’t think anything of it. I easily just asked him if he wanted one, opened the box, and he read the inside! Super cute, super fun, and super easy!

If you want to ask your crush, best friend, boyfriend, or even just the cute kid in your English class, there’s so much more than just a “hey, want to come to semi with me?” text. Here’s some of my personal favorites I found on Pinterest!

With chicken wings: “I didn’t know how to ask you, so I decided to just WING it- semi?”

Red solo cups: “Don’t make me go SOLO to semi!”

A fish: “I picked you out of all the FISH in the sea, so will you come to semi with me?”

Chicken McNuggets: “I’d be one lucky NUGGET if you went to semi with me!”

Pizza: “I know this is CHEESY, but semi?”

Do you have an event coming up that you’re going to ask someone to? Let me know how you’re going to do so below!

An Open Letter to my Little as She Becomes a Grand-Big

I’ve never done a post like this before, readers. But for anyone in Greek life, I figured they would understand my feelings to my little as she reaches a new stepping stone in our sorority. So here goes my open letter to my little –

To my most perfect little one,

From the second we met, I knew you were meant to be mine. It wasn’t even recruitment yet, but I remember meeting you and thinking “SHE is my future little” and texting my own big with nervous and anticipation, explaining I had already found the future member of our perfect family. And through recruitment and bid night, when you ran into my arms, I was reassured. One of my best friend, future bridesmaids, and rocks just came running into my life. I was blessed with the greatest big and was even happier to welcome you, my perfect little, into the Bad Girls Club.

1371528_10201847910786929_1229307681_n

Over that year together, I was reminded each and every day of our bond. From library dates, Saturday nights out with Saturday night cuddle sessions, laughs, tears, ups, downs, and tons of (post going out) food, you were the little sister I never had. I took you under my wing the same way my perfect big did for me – which fraternity boys to talk to, the best places to spend your weekend (and occasional weekday) nights, clothing advice, and the ins and outs of college and sorority life.

I bragged about you – your awesome grades, student involvement, great fashion sense, and even how amazing your mom’s food was. You were (and still are) perfect and I wanted to scream it from the top of Sleeping Giant Mountain the exact same way I still do.

My friends called you little. My family called you little. I called you little and you were all mine.

10492108_10204720878449325_6700410701415544068_n

But then, you got your own little.  Another perfect addition to the Bad Girls Club – an ice cream loving, Taylor Swift singing, Grateful Dead drinking Bad Girl who fit in just perfectly. She became the next addition to the group of best friends and future bridesmaids who support each other through and through.

Deep down, I was always so nervous I was just going to fade into the background. It was an irrational fear, I always knew, because our relationship was more than just a sorority title tied together with gifts and cute Instagram pictures. But I was never good at sharing and now I had to share you – the same way Katherine had to share me. In the same excitement, happiness, and pride that I swallowed you up in, I began fearing if I ever made Katherine feel left out and then got nervous that I was going to feel left out.

You had your own little one to spoil and I had to learn to share you. She would be cuddled up with you on a Saturday night and she would be going to Chipotle when you just need to vent, too. Just the same way that you quickly became my best friend, along side my own big, she was going to do the same.

And at the same time, all those fears of being thrown to the side, were pushed aside on their own. I was so proud of you. I bragged how awesome of a job you were doing with your own little, how you were so nurturing and making such an impact on our chapter. How, per usual, you were being just so amazing and awesome and perfect.

11988267_10205332053529607_1862733564542321175_n

And now it’s your turn. Lauren just welcomed Taylor into a group of girls that the chapter said “good luck” to during reveal. She’s another 1 am-diner-eating Bad Girl who is going to be standing next to us at the alter.

But remember, another addition to the family will never lessen the value of one. It’s another person to help lift a Bad Girl’s spirits, support her, and hold her hair on her worst nights. She’ll be there to tell you boys suck, your hair looks pretty, and anything else you want – and sometimes may need- to hear. Never fear that your own big-little relationship is in shambles, because in the end, it really isn’t. And when you feel like it may be, I’ll be there with coffee oreo ice cream to assure you that it is not.

Love you forever and a day,

Your biggie

Twenty-one, Single, & Exactly How I Want It To Be

During a recent dinner time conversation with my mom, we discussed dating, relationships, and friends of mine in serious relationships.

We then continued to discuss people I went to high school with that are engaged, married, or are having/have kids.

I’m not even close to any of these. Oh no, no, no. In the future – but not too near- I do plan on getting engaged, having my Cinderella themed wedding, and having kids.

But for now, I’m single- which is exactly what I want to be.

For right now, at 21 years old, I am choosing to be single. I am living my life by my rules, while I can. Life is what you make it- which  is why I want my college years to be exactly how I want them to be.

I have so many opportunities presented to me at all times of the day. With these opportunities, I want to take them on with my own rules and my own perspective. If I want to go out to a club on a Saturday night, I’m going to. If I want to have a girls night, I will. I don’t have anyone else’s schedule to plan mine around. I don’t want to have to think before doing. I want to just live my life and live out my actions for me.

Right now, I am having the time of my life with my best friends – people who I know will be by my side in the future.

bridesmaids1

I am more focused on finding the women who will be standing next to me as my bridesmaids than I am the man standing next to me at the alter. I don’t want my kids to ask me about college and start my stories around “some boy” that no longer matters. I want them to be revolving around my friends, who they know and whose own kids mine will be friends with them.

I’m out, meeting new people. If you want to wine and dine me, I won’t say no. But at the end of the night, I am eating Dominos with my friends, talking about the night, then getting into our pajamas for a sleepover.

More importantly, I am learning how to be strong and independent. I can take care of myself. I can fix my own things when they break.  I am working hard in all aspects of my life so I can succeed. I don’t need to depend on a man in my future. I am a strong woman who will not take a back seat to a man.

If it wasn’t for discovering myself and all that I accomplish now, by being single, I may never have had to figure it out.

This isn’t my pledge of swearing off boys – some of my very best friends are of the male gender, my future groomsmen.

This is my pledge as to why I’m putting more time and effort into me and my life. I’m young and I’m doing what’s best for me.

Thanks U by Kotex for keeping me confident when wearing white during recruitment

This is a sponsored post. However, all opinions are my own.

Thank you to Kotex brand, Kleenex brand, and Acorn Influence for the opportunity.

Happy hump day readers!

This past weekend I went through my last recruitment. I would type cue the sobbing…but I haven’t stopped.

Recruitment is equivalent to Christmas shopping and wrapping gifts for Christmas Day, with Christmas Day being bid day when all the new members come running home. We meet hundreds of women who are interested in joining our organization, for hours on end for days on end. At the end of the weekend, we welcomed home the beautiful new members into the organization that gave me life long friends, my future bridesmaids, and my rocks with a 90’s theme Bid Day for show off our “New Bids on the Block!”

However, this year’s recruitment was a lot more stressful than usual.

Talking to potential new members? I’m completely fine with it. I didn’t win “Most Talkative” in high school for nothing! Getting up in front of others and talking about how much Alpha Delta Pi means to me, even if it means discussing the loss of my dad? I’m able to get through it because my sisters comfort me every step of the way. Riding the crimson wave when I’m going through recruitment in white shorts and a white dress? SO not okay.

(Bonus points if you can name what movie the terms “crimson wave” and “as if!” are from – because it’s my all-time FAVE)

A few days before recruitment, I had gotten an awesome female-only care package from Kotex, filled with U by Kotex products and a gift card to Walmart. As soon as the gift card came in, I checked my Lilly Pulitzer planner to see when I would be getting a visit from good ole Aunt Flow and quickly went and stocked up on U by Kotex products for recruitment weekend! Plus, I got a bonus Kleenex wallet pack which was super cute and super necessary to put into my Michael Kors bag for when I need to go into SoHo for my internship.

U by Kotex is a feminine care line with products very different than other feminine care products. U by Kotex has a thin, sleek, easy to conceal product that makes me feel confident when using the product. The Kotex company, which is all about girl-power and enjoying being a female, wants the cool chicks who use their products feel happy and confident, while giving them the right tools to succeed when their monthly visitor has them wanting to  lay in bed all day with a heat pack, Ben & Jerry’s, and a Lifetime movie.

On day one of recruitment, the sisterhood round, we wore our chapter letters with white shorts or jeans. In my super cute patterned white shorts from Dressbarn, I was rocking the round with my sister friends, meeting potential new sisters, and informing others about how much I love my Alpha Delta Pi sisterhood.

I never had to fret about having a female crisis because I was confident that my U by Kotex products would keep me accident free! During the rounds and all of the fun photos (like some shown below!), I always had a smile on my face and could be my confident self because U by Kotex was doing it’s job.

With day one successfully in the books, I was able to pack up my bag and head back to the land-of-freshmen to my RA bedroom. When throwing everything in my bag, then repacking the bag for the next day, I never had to worry about the feminine care products taking up space. They were in sleek packaging, which easily fit in my ADPi Lilly Pultizer tote , alongside my text books for homework and change of clothes. What an added bonus!

On day two, which was the philanthropy round, I was able to confidently talk about how much I love Alpha Delta Pi’s national philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and all that our chapter does for our local RMH chapter in New Haven. For this day, my sisters and I wore white dresses and red necklaces. Throughout all my conversations, I never once had to worry that another part of my outfit, other than my necklace, would become red!
