Making The Most of Your Dorm Room Space

So I’m back at school! I moved into my dorm room yesterday for my sophomore year. I am so in love with the way that my room came out – everything fell perfectly into place. Here’s a photo of my room! (Check out how awesome the DIY photo collages I posted about previously look!)

Image

One of the biggest struggles of dorm room living is making the most of your space. You aren’t always blessed with a lot (last year I literally had a corner in a quad with a lofted bed!), so you need to make the most of what you got! Because in the words of my favorite six year old, you get what you get and you don’t get upset.

So without getting upset, you have to try and cram so much into the space. As much as every parent would love, it is just so hard to downsize because I really do need all of this extra stuff in my room. Here are a few tips on making the best of it:

1. Check out the space in advance. Sometimes this may not always be an option, but there are ways around it. For this year, my suitemates and I visited the room we are living in this year last year. When we did come, we took pictures (make sure to ask the current residents if that’s okay!). Then, in August, when we wanted to see more than just what we had photos of – we relied on Facebook! My direct roommate and I went through photo albums of other people we know who lived in a similar building to see how they set up their room until we both fell in love with a setup. It made it so much easier come move in day because we already had a plan in mind. If we never checked out the space in advance, or checked Facebook, we could have wasted hours trying to figure out just how we wanted to place our beds!

2. Use the space under the bed. For underneath my bed this year, I have four bins of storage, my hamper, my rain boots, two cases of water, my shoes in a plastic shoe organizer, and a black milk crate of cleaning supplies. Wow- that’s a lot! Everything under there is necessity – so I knew I had to make room for it all. That’s why having space under the bed becomes so helpful – it’s literally just giant open space waiting for you to load it full with your stuff!  To give myself even more room, I bought 4 inch bed risers:

With the comforter, you can't even tell all of what is under there - which is great for privacy!

With the comforter, you can’t even tell all of what is under there – which is great for privacy!

And then when I move back the comforter - you can see all of what I have underneath!

And then when I move back the comforter – you can see all of what I have underneath! It’s so much!!

3. Make command hooks your best friend. I know it sounds silly, but they come in so handy! I’m pretty tall (about 5’8) so a lot of my chapter dresses for sorority are longer than the space allotted in the dresser for width. One of my biggest pet peeves in life is being wrinkled- and if one of my chapter dresses got wrinkled I would have honestly have a total meltdown. So what I did was put command hooks on each sides of the closet, higher up than the hook inside the closet. I then hung about six dresses (in their dry cleaners bags) on each side. This is seriously saved so much room in my closet and keeps my dresses wrinkle free! I then stuck a bag on the side of my shelving unit and one on the front of my closet to hang my extra bags – my purse and my ADPi tote (my backpacks are behind my door on a bigger shelving hook – if you aren’t lucky enough to get one of these, then definitely hang your backpack(s) up on command hooks! You don’t want to let those get thrown around on the floor!). Another huge recommendation I would make is to use a command hook to hang up your robe on the front of your dresser (or your wet towels if you don’t have a drying rack). A robe is a HUGE necessity in college, so having somewhere to always put it that it allows it to dry, while not taking up space in your closet is a huge must! They’re also really important for hanging up some of your decorations.

I hope these tips and tricks make moving in and setting up a lot easier! Good luck to all of you readers this semester!

My Monday Musts!

This Monday is such an important Monday for me – it’s my last Monday at home before moving back into college tomorrow for my sophomore year! I am just so excited to get back to school – not just to see all my incredible friends and my Alpha Delta Pi sisters, but for the extracurricular activities I am involved in and for my classes.

Call me a nerd, but I love to learn. I’m very interested in my classes this semester, such as broadcast writing and nutrition, which means my yearning to learn is twice as intense. Plus, my dedication to my classes is so strong that I am proud to say that I have made Dean’s List for both semesters of my freshman year. I also love doing extracurriculars, besides just being apart of Greek Life, and piling them sky high on my plate – such as being a staff writer for the school newspaper, the Managing Editor for the school yearbook, and a writer for Quinnipiac’s chapter of HerCampus. This semester, I have other activities I want to be involved and other goals I have set for myself to make for this to be an exciting year ahead!

So on my last night home in Jersey before heading off to school, I present to you, readers, this week’s Monday Musts!

1. My First Blogging Freebie!

Today is my two month-iversary of creating “Sparkle and Shine.” Yay! Though for only being two months old, I have been granted a lot of wonderful opportunities, such as writing this post and this post for Greek Cover Photo and writing this post for Campus Book Rentals (who is currently having a fall sale, might I add). This past week, I have been in contact with sorority super star and author, Cheryll Duffie. I was completely starstruck when Cheryll got in contact with me and asked me to write about her bookEverything I Need to Know in Life I Learned from Being in a Sorority. Yesterday, I received a package from Cheryll – my first blogging freebie! Ahhh! I’m so excited to be working with Cheryll. Readers, be on the lookout for some very exciting things to come from this!

2. Whodunnit?

One of my favorite summer shows was ABC’s Whodunnit?, a crime solving reality TV series. It took real life people and set them in a real life Clue game – where one contestant was the murderer, one was the ultimate winner, and the rest were killed off episode by episode. Each episode kept me on the edge of my seat – playing along with the contestants. My mom was also addicted to the show, so it became similar to us playing a real life Clue game trying to see who the murder really was. The season finale was last night, however, full episodes are online to watch!

3. Silver Linings Playbook

I’ve heard so many positives about the award winning movie Silver Linings Playbook, but have never gotten around to watching it. A few nights ago, I was flipping through the On Demand Movies top movies section and found this movie. I never knew what the movie was about, watched the preview, and instantly knew that Silver Linings Playbook was the movie I was going to watch that night. I fell in love with the movie as each second passed. Pat, played by Bradley Cooper, was recently released from a mental hospital for bipolar disorder and is striving to get his wife back. While aiming to get her back, Pat meets Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence,  a recently-widowed woman who is struggling to deal with her own demons. The movie made me laugh, made me cry, made me smile, and overall shows viewers that no matter you are struggling with – there is something out there that will make you happy. If I could, I would watch this movie again and again everyday.

Dorm Room Decor DIY: Photo Collages

As I get ready to move back into school on Tuesday, my inner decorating diva is coming out. Since I am now going to be living in a double instead of a quad at Quinnipiac, I have much more room to decorate. My love for photos, life long preservatives of memories, was very obvious to anyone who stepped into my room last year due to my large cork board and surrounding open space being covered with photos. Since I have more space to decorate this year, I decided that I wanted to do something a little bit different than just a cork board of photos to decorate (besides hang up my abundance of One Direction posters and Alpha Delta Pi crafts, of course).

I went to Walmart and for less than ten dollars I was able to get a large 16 inches by 20 inches photo frame to put the photos in. I then went to CVS, who was having a sale for fifteen cent photos with your CVS Card, to print out photos. Once I had the frame and the photos, I was able to start putting it all together!

photo (11)

The reason I got this frame was because it said that it was easy to undo the glass and it really was! After taking off the plastic, I was very easily able to snap the glass out of the frame. It took enough muscle to know that it wouldn’t just easily fall out, but not enough muscle that I was going to need a screwdriver or any other tool. In fact, there were no screws on the frame at all!

photo (13)

With the glass popped out, I turned over the cardboard to reveal the black side. Then, I took all my photos and started stategically laying them out on the board. It wasn’t an easy task to fit the pictures in- I had to see what could lay where, which meant some photos would overlap, and sometimes find pictures that were zoomed out farther to sit in between photos where there was not a lot of room. It wasn’t a long process, but the perfectionist in me wanted to make sure that it was absolutely perfect.

photo (12)

No glue was even required because I just snapped the glass back in, just as easily as it snapped out. Another perk of not using glue is that I can reuses this frame as time goes on for my dorm room decor. As time passes, I will want to swap in new photos. To do so, all I will have to do is snap the glass out, remove the photo, then snap the glass in. Super easy!

Overall, this quick and easy DIY took me about 15 minutes and will preserve my memories a lot better than just pinning them up!

I love the way the frame came out and I can’t wait to hang it in my room on Tuesday!

My Monday Musts

Happy Monday, everybody!

Last week, I posted my first ever set of Monday Musts and it turned out to be a huuuge success. Yay!

Now this week, my last full week before heading back to college for my sophomore year, I have a new set of obsessions to share with you all.

And they are…..

1. “Spring Breakers” Movie

So I have been impatiently waiting to watch this movie, and I finally did! Over the weekend, my best friend and I decide to stay in and stuff our face with appetizer foods and Red Lobster biscuits, bake a cake, and watch the movie in our sweats. Now, honestly, it wasn’t what I was expecting – I mean, who would be expecting an ex- Disney Channel star and a Pretty Little Liar to be walking around shooting people with giant guns?! I’m still questioning what exactly the plot was, the accuracy of the story, and how James Franco still managed to look so attractive while looking so disgusting. However, I still managed to be obsessed with the movie and want to rewatch it over and over again. Spring break forever!

2. DSW

As I said, I move back to school next week! That means last minute shopping for clothes, dorm accessories, and of course, shoes! I really wanted a pair of black wedges to try and wear with everything for when I was going out, but since I am on a budget that meant that I couldn’t get too crazy (because I will drop a ton of money easily on a cute pair of shoes. Oops!) and be smart. That’s why I decided to go to DSW – where I could get super cute shoes for super cheap. Plus, the Shopping Gods led me right to the sale rack where I fell in love with a pair that was an extra 40% off! I managed to save over $55 on these Guess wedges – paying only $25 instead of $80. I know where I will always be going for shoes now!

3. Looking for Alaska by John Green

When I first read John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars when it first came out a little over a year ago, I quickly fell in love with the book, the characters, Green’s writing style, just everything about it. I kept telling myself that I had to read another John Green novel ASAP, but whenever it came time for me to download a new book on my nook – I always ended up picking a newly released novel and not just browsing for a John Green novel. This past week I finally reminded myself to download one of his books and I fell in love with this book and these characters just like I did The Fault in Our Stars. The novel follows around a wallflower, Miles, who transfers to a boarding school, Culver Creek, in order to find his “The Great Perhaps.” Culver Creek holds so much more for Miles than he could ever expect. Through every twist and turn in growing up and falling in love, Green keeps the reader so drawn in that the reader can’t help but to fall in love with the novel. It’s a must read for everybody.

This past week has been one to remember with a bunch of last minute memories to make in the summer of 2013 and was able to bring along this week’s set of Monday Musts!  I wonder what the next week will have in store for me!

Have a great week, everybody! XOXO

My Monday Musts!

Happy Monday, everybody!

I have been working really hard recently trying to come up with the perfect weekly blog idea. Last night, right as I was about to doze off – the idea hit me: My Monday Musts! Every Monday I will be posting about 3 obsessions of mine from the week before.

Without further ado, here is this week’s Monday Musts!

1. CBS’ “Big Brother”

As the drama continues to heat up this season, I continue to become more and more obsessed. Whenever I miss an episode (“Big Brother” is on three times a week), I am always watching it On Demand the next day. I follow at least ten Big Brother twitters that give a play by play of the live feeds and am about to go out and buy Judd’s bear shirt from Walmart since he’s my favorite!

2. “Done” by The Band Perry

Fun fact about me – I love country music. If it’s angsty and girl empowering, then expect me to be blasting it and screaming along at the top of my lungs. My current favorite is the Band Perry’s “Done.” It’s about being done with someone who doesn’t treat you right because everyone deserves to be treated well! Expect me to be tweeting these lyrics for quite some time.

3. My Lilly Pulitzer planner

I was never the type of girl to just sit around and do nothing, especially at school. Between my classes, homework, my sorority, newspaper, yearbook, Her Campus, and now my blog – I don’t have much spare time. I write everything down in my planner and use it as if it was my lifeline. Now that is is officially August, I can start using my Lilly Pulitzer planner than I am absolutely in love with! There’s so much space for me to write down everything I need.

lilly planner

I wonder what this week will entail. I’ll let you all know in next week’s Monday Musts!

Enjoy your week!

Guess Whose Cartilage is Pierced?! Mine!

My best friend got her cartilage pierced when she was in the 8th grade.

A girl in my sixth grade class got hers pierced when she was in the fourth grade.

I got my cartilage pierced at nineteen after waiting years for it.

For me, it is more than just a piece of jewelry. I have always wanted my cartilage pierced, however, I am putting in my deceased father’s earring to always carry a part of my guardian angel with me. After waiting three years, the time was right to finally get the piercing.

With my best friend in tow (who took pictures, of course) I went and got it done earlier this week!

20130731-195351.jpg

When I tell you I was freaking out, I was freaking out. Even with having broken multiple bones and had surgery, I still turn into a little baby and freak out when I know I am about to face pain. With only having two holes in each ear, I was so unsure what the stabbing of a needle for my cartilage was going to be like.

Thank goodness, the piercer, Ian, was so used to people freaking out (he said that I was nothing compared to most people, but I don’t believe him). He totally tricked me, which helped make it easier. After marking a dot on my ear in Sharpie as to where the piercing would go, he said he was going to mark another one so I could decide where I want. While talking to my best friend, he stabbed the needle through without me even noticing! Since it felt different than the marker, I started asking profusely “did you do it?! did you do it?!” to which he kept denying until the earring was fully clasped on my ear and the process was over. He definitely made the experience a lot easier!

I am so happy with the way it turned out and am so glad I did this. I can’t wait for the six weeks to pass so I can put my daddy’s earring in!

Do you have any piercings with a story behind them? Tell me about it below!

Crushed: Pretty Little Liars Series by Sara Shepard

My absolute favorite downtime in my hectic life is reading. With my Nook or Nook app on my iPhone always handy, I am always finding ways possible to be reading at any given free moment. I’ll even hide my phone to pull up my Nook app at work and read in between customers, but shhhhh!, don’t tell anyone!

My absolute favorite book series is Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars. When recently browsing through the Barnes and Nobles site for a new book to read, I came across Shepard’s recently released Crushed, book number 13 in the series. I immediately knew what my next purchase was going to be!

In true Shepard and Pretty Little Liars form, Crushed delivered page – turning suspense that led me wanting more. Shepard throws in enough twists and turns that the reader never knows what to expect. Then, just when the reader thinks all the pieces are coming together, an even bigger plot twist than even imaginable is thrown into play! No other book series is more of a page turner than this one. Crushed far exceeded that standard.

In the 13th novel in the series, the Pretty Little Liars – Hanna, Spencer, Emily, and Aria – have discovered that their mysterious stalker, A, is not working alone. The girls each look into one person that could be A’s potential helper.

This puts Hanna back in her pink scrubs and volunteering at the burn clinic to wait for Graham to wake up from his coma. Hanna’s hoping he will be able to reveal who he saw stalking the girls on their cruise to Jamaica and who set the bomb off that put him in that coma. When Graham does wake up, on the night of the girls’ prom, can he tell Hanna what she wants to hear that puts A to rest?

As Aria is now dealing with hidden skeletons in her closet after a recent trip to Iceland, she must know investigate her boyfriend, typical Rosewood boy, Noel. As Aria now starts finding out more and more about Noel, their relationship begins to become very strained. Is Noel really who Aria thinks he is?

Emily, the most fearful liar, ends up somewhere she was never hoping to return – the metal hospital where Ali, and her sister Courtney, both stayed, The Preserve. Here, Emily must talk to Ali’s old roommate, Iris, who hasn’t been released in four years. Iris sees this an opportunity to better herself. Is Iris really going to be able to help the girls or is naive Emily letting A’s helper roam freely around around Rosewood and the King James Mall?

Lastly, Spencer decides to take on the biggest challenge of them all. Instead of investigating more of A’s helper, she plans on investigating more of Ali as A. This leads Spencer into digging up more dirt on a Rosewood conspiracy theory blog. Once Spencer meets the creator of the blog, Chase, she ends up digging him! Is Chase really going to be able to help unlock clues in the mystery of Ali as A, or is he helping Ali get more information on the Pretty Little Liars?

For the girls, and the reader, the pieces seemed to be coming together revealing who A’s helper is…

But have the girls really solved the mystery as to who A’s helper is, or is A always calling the shots? Find out now in Crushed, a must read for any Pretty Little Liars fan!

Campus Book Rentals: A Cheaper Alternative to Buying Textbooks at the Bookstore

This is a sponsored post, however, all opinions are my own.

As an only child, I didn’t know about all the little hints and tips around college life when I first started prepping for my freshman year at Quinnipiac last summer. So that meant when I had to buy my textbooks, I purchased them from the school bookstore. I remember how excited I was when I first went to go to buy my textbooks (yes, I drove 2 hours to Quinnipiac just to buy my textbooks in the beginning of July instead of ordering them online like the rest of my peers). Except my excitement had quickly come to an end when the bill for my text books came to be over $600! I was used to getting free textbooks in high school, and now, I was paying hundreds of dollars for books that I will only be using for a couple of months.

After throwing away so much of my hard earned money (that’s about 10 shifts at my job!), I knew that I had to find an alternative to buying books at the bookstore. I was very skeptical about purchasing books through older students or off of generic ordering websites, like Amazon, because I was unsure of the condition of the textbook I was going to be receiving or how reliable of a service it would truly be.

After three semesters of searching (I already bought my books from my school’s bookstore for my first semester of sophomore year), I finally found a site in which I can trust to order my textbooks: Campus Book Rentals.

campus book rentals

After doing research on Campus Book Rentals, I found out that there were a bunch of perks by using this website to rent my textbooks. The biggest perk out of all was that I would be saving 40% – 90% off of the bookstore price! College is such an expensive time, so any extra money that I can save is huge bonus. Another way that the site helps me save money is that it offers shipping is free both ways.

I can also highlight and annotate in the textbooks without being charged extra. I love getting clean, new books and then highlighting and annotating in them to keep track of my notes so I know what is important for me to know. It’s a big study tool to help me be successful in college, so I am extremely grateful that Campus Book Rentals lets me do this. The site also offers flexible renting periods, which means I can select how long I want to rent my textbook for.

Another perk of the site is that with every textbook rented, part of the money goes to Operation Sunshine, an international organization that provides surgeries for children with cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities. Not only are you benefiting by getting your text books cheaper, but you are benefiting a child who can’t necessarily help themselves. How great of a feeling is that?!

As I’m sitting here with textbooks that the bookstore wouldn’t buy back (of course, I tried to sell my books back and only got back one fourth, if that, of what I paid for them), Campus Book Rentals offers an awesome program called RentBack.

rent back

Rentback allows students to rent out the textbooks that they already own to other students, which means that the student renting out their books can make 2x – 4x as much money as they would make compared to selling back their books! This is a program no college student should miss!

To learn even more about all that Campus Book Rentals has to offer, check out this video.

Don’t waste all your hard earned money by wasting hundreds at the bookstore to purchase your textbooks, visit Campus Book Rentals today!

Taylor Swift’s RED Tour – July 13, 2013

Taylor Swift told her concert goers at her July 13 MetLife Stadium performance, apart of her RED tour, that she just had to perform somewhere where she knew the fans would be absolutely out of control on July 13th. Swift continued to tell her fans, as any Swift fan would know, that 13 is her lucky number and July is her favorite month. When Taylor explained this, the fans in the crowd went wild.

photo (7)

One of those screaming Swift fans, who spent their night belting out the lyrics to their favorite songs was myself. I was the concert with two of my friends, Kate and Tori. Every single one of the performers of the evening proved how talented they truly are, making it one of the best concerts I have been to.

photo (6)

One of the first opening acts was up-and-coming country singer Joel Crouse. All of the girls in the audience instantly started swooning over the country cutie when he came on stage. I’ve been to concerts when the first opening act comes on stage and barely gets any attention. However, it was much different for Crouse. He was able to catch the attention of everyone in the audience with his singing, including his recently debuted on iTunes song “If You Want Some.” I look forward to what Crouse will do in the future. He’s definitely going to be famous and I will be telling everyone I heard him in concert first (just like I did when I first heard the Jonas Brothers at an Aly&AJ concert in 2005).

DSCN3022

After Crouse came on, seventeen year old Austin Mahone performed. I was so excited for Mahone’s opening act performance. His songs are just so catchy and upbeat, I often find myself listening to them, singing them, and then knowing all of the words. Mahone, just like Crouse, is definitely an up-and-coming star! Not only was Mahone super talented as a singer, he also is an extremely talented dancer! Mahone was able to put on a good show for the little bit of time he was on stage. Not to mention, he performed Jesse McCartney’s “Beautiful Soul” which had every girl in the audience wanting more!

photo (9)

The next performer of the evening was Ed Sheeran. I’ll be honest, I’m not really a Sheeran fan. I know “Lego House” and “The A Team” from singing along to in the car because they came on the radio, but I’ve never heard another song other than those. I really just know him because of those two songs, and since he has written a few One Direction songs. One thing is for sure, however – Sheeran is a performer! Any member of the crowd could tell that Sheeran was putting his heart and soul into the performance (he even broke a guitar!) which really drew in the attention. When talking to the crowd, he really knew how to gauge his audience’s attention. Though I did not walk away a newly obsessed Sheeran fan, I did walk away knowing that he is extremely talented and a great performer live.

photo (8)

After all the opening acts were over, that meant one thing and one thing only, Taylor Swift was set to perform next. With this being my second concert of hers, I was so excited to see the amazing performance Swift would put on this time. I had originally saw her in 2010 during her Speak Now tour. She blew me away with her performance last time, that I knew that she was going to do a phenomenal job this time, as well.

Swift opened up the show with “State of Grace.” The music played on for a while, with Swift’s silhouette hidden behind a red curtain., hyping up the crowd. Finally, the red curtain fell to the ground, causing Swift to appear. The crowd busted out in screams, cheers, and applause before everyone started singing along to the first song of the night.

DSCN3037

Swift continued the show singing, in order, “Holy Ground,” “Red,” and “You Belong With Me.” Swift then sat down on the front of the stage, and started to discuss her days of being bullied. She spoke words of empowerment for those in the audience who face any form of bully, or someone who is mean. One of my favorite parts of Swift’s concerts is when she talks to the crowd because she really knows how to connect with them. Each word she picks comes out powerful and strong. Swift talked for a few minutes before singing “Mean.”

DSCN3044

Then, before singing “Stay,” Swift threw in a sassy comment, saying how though she is known for break up songs and songs about the guy leaving, she sometimes writes songs for the guy to stay. Swift then combined the song with Lumineer’s “Ho Hey.”

DSCN3046

Swift then sang “22,” one of the hit’s from her “RED” album. During this song, Swift was transported by her dancers to the B stage, a smaller stage situated at the opposite end of the stadium. After “22,” Swift then sang one of my all time faves, “Should’ve Said No.” Swift told the audience that a girl during her meet and greet had requested her to perform this. I freaked out. Like I said, this is one of my all time favorite songs ever since I saw Swift perform it last at her 2010 concert. I have to admit, I think I scream/sang along the most to this song during the entire concert. I absolutely love Taylor Swift throwback songs!

DSCN3064

Ed Sheehran then came back out to help Swift sing, “Everything has Changed.” Swift then continued to sing “Begin Again” and my “Speak Now” favorite, “Sparks Fly.”

Swift then told the audience that she had a surprise guest! Patrick Stump, from Fall Out Boy, then came out! Swift and Stump then sang FOB’s recent hit “My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark (Light ‘Em Up).”

DSCN3075

Swift then asked all audience members to hold their phones up in the air. With thousands upon thousands of audience members doing so, it was such an incredible experience to see. It was really cool to see so many strangers join in something all together. Swift and Stump both tweeted about the experience later that evening.

DSCN3079

Swift then had another customer change and came out singing, “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

DSCN3088

Taylor Swift then sat down at her piano to sing “Begin Again” and “Treacherous.” Another aspect of Swift performances that make them so great is the emotion that Swift puts in. She puts her all into each song – this is especially noticeable when Swift sings as she plays piano. Each facial expression is magnified so closely on the video screens so every audience member can see Swift’s expressions.

DSCN3095

With another costume change, Swift sang the old time hit, “Love Story.”

DSCN3102

As the final song of the night, Taylor Swift sang “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Swift came out in a sequined ring-leader like costume, singing her heart out. Part of Swift’s stage raised into the area while fireworks exploded from the sides of the stage. In true Taylor Swift concert fashion, the ending of the concert was over the top.

DSCN3117

With my second Taylor Swift concert under my belt, I can honestly say Swift can put on one incredible show!
